Muri-gries

The "Weingut / Klosterkellerei Muri-Gries" is located in Gries near Bolzano in the Italian wine-growing region of South Tyrol (Trentino-South Tyrol). The origins of today's monastery date back to 1845, when Benedictine monks from the Swiss town of Muri in the canton of Aargau took over the Augustinian Canonry in Gries, which had already been abolished at that time. In addition to the Muri-Gries vineyard, the monastery also cultivates orchards, a mountain farm in Kampidell near Jenesien and a monastery nursery. For a long time, the wine made by the monastery itself was mainly for its own use. Christian Werth is responsible as managing director and oenologist.

Muri-Gries - Klosteranlage und Weingut mit Weingärten

From the beginning of the 1960s, wine was bottled for the first time. The vineyards comprise 35 hectares of vines owned by the company, with a further 20 hectares being used to produce grapes from contractually bound farmers. The heart of the area is the single vineyard Klosteranger, surrounded by old stone walls, which was included in the Austro-Hungarian cadastre in 1901. The soil consists of material washed up by the Talfer river on a subsoil of Bolzano quartz porphyry.

80% of the red wine varieties Lagrein,Pinot Noir (Pinot Noir), Rosenmuskateller, Vernatsch(Schiava Grossa) and Grauvernatsch(Schiava Grigia) are cultivated and processed, and 20% of the white wine varietiesPinot Blanc (Weißburgunder), Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Silvaner and Sauvignon(Sauvignon Blanc). The most important variety, Lagrein (80%), is particularly well cared for. Only biotypes from our own selection are used for new Lagrein plantations. Cultivation is carried out according to methods of near-natural, integrated viticulture with low vine stock stress and careful intervention in plant growth and the environment.

The wines are produced in the two lines Muri-Gries and Abtei Muri as DOC South Tyrolean, Kalterersee, St. Magdalener and Terlaner Weißburgunder. They are fermented in steel tanks and, depending on the type of wine, are aged in stainless steel, in large wooden barrels or in barriques. The premium wines include Lagrein Riserva Abtei Muri, Kalterersee Auslese Classico (Vernatsch) and Terlaner Weißburgunder Riserva. All wines can be tasted and purchased in the Abbey's own vinotheque. The winery is a member of the association "Weingüter Südtirols".
