One of the Alsace Grand Cru classified sites within the Alsace Grand Cru appellation (Bas-Rhin). It must not be confused with the Moenchberg site. In the 12th century, the Cistercian monks of the Maumgarten Abbey cultivated vines here. The vineyards cover 18 hectares of vineyards at an altitude of 250 to 310 metres above sea level on volcanic, gravelly sandstone soil in the municipality of Nothalten. They are protected from wind and rain by the 901-metre-high Ungersberg (Vosges Mountains). Mainly the variety Riesling is cultivated here, as well as Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris in smaller areas. Well-known producers are Willy Gisselbrecht, Gilbert Hassenforder, René et Michel Koch, Gérard Landmann and André Ostertag.
The wein.plus encyclopaedia is a comprehensive, well-researched reference work. Available anytime and anywhere, it has become an indispensable part of teaching, used by students and myself alike. Highly recommended!
