The red grape variety originates from France. Synonyms are Bouillenc, Marseillan, Marseille Noir Mortes, Mortes, Plant de Larroque and Saintmacere. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Magdeleine Noire des Charentes x Penouille. It is cultivated in south-west France. However, no stock was reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
