The red grape variety (also Morellone) comes from Italy. It must not be confused with Sangiovese (Morellino) or Morellino del Valdarno, despite the fact that it seems to have synonyms or morphological or name-similarities. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2008, Morellino del Casentino and Sangiovese have a parent-offspring relationship (but the most likely parent is Sangiovese). The variety used to be cultivated in Tuscany, but is no longer of any importance today. In 2016, no stocks were recorded (Kym Anderson).
