Montils

The white grape variety originates from France. Synonyms are Aucarot, Aucerot, Blanc de Montils and Chalosse. It should not be confused with the varieties Folle Blanche (Chalosse Blanche) or Meslier Saint-François, despite the synonyms or morphological similarities that seem to indicate it. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it is one of the numerous direct descendants of the Gouais Blanc variety; the second parent is unknown. The medium-ripening vine is susceptible to botrytis. The variety is grown in the Charente département in south-west France. It is permitted in Cognac and in the Pineau des Charentes area for white wines. The almost extinct variety was revived in the early 1990s. It is cultivated on 165 hectares in France. Small populations are also said to exist in Australia and Argentina. However, only the French stock was designated in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
