Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

DOC area for red wine in the Italian region of Abruzzo (the area has nothing to do with the town of the same name or the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in Tuscany). In 2010, a separate DOC area was created for the rosé wine Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo. The zone includes hilly areas up to 500 metres, or for the southern slopes facing the midday sun up to 600 metres above sea level, in a total of 174 municipalities in the four provinces of Chieti (60), L'Aquila (37), Pescara (39) and Teramo (38). The area is divided into the subzones Casauria or Terre di Casauria/Pescara (85%), Terre die Vestini/Pescara (90%), Alto Tirino/L'Aquila (95%), Terre dei Peligni/L'Aquila (95%) and Teate/Chieti (90%). The wine must contain between 85% and 95% of Montepulciano in each subzone (see above). Other authorised varieties may be used up to a maximum of 15%. There is also a Riserva. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna followed by the name of the vineyard can be indicated.
