The white grape variety originates from Spain. The name refers to the size of the huge grapes. It is listed in Wine Grapes as an independent variety, but in the VIVC catalogue Monstruosa it is listed as a synonym for the varieties Damaschino and Garrido Fino. The late-maturing, vigorous vine is susceptible to powdery mildew. It produces white wines with high acidity, moderate alcohol content and floral aromas. The endangered vine was saved from extinction in 2002 by José Luis Mateo of the Quinta da Muradella winery in the Monterrei area of the northwestern region of Galicia by planting 789 vines. No stock was recorded in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
