The French doctor of medicine Pierre-Marie Alexis Millardet (1838-1902) became professor of botany at the University of Strasbourg in 1868. From 1874, he was a member of the committee formed by many scientists to fight phylloxera in France. He is credited (along with other people) with the idea of grafting European scions onto American rootstocks. Together with Georg Engelmann, Jules Émile Planchon, Charles Valentine Riley and Pierre Viala, he is regarded as the saviour of European viticulture from phylloxera. His name is included in the botanical name of the vine species Vitis cinerea Engelm. ex Millardet..
For my many years of work as an editor with a wine and culinary focus, I always like to inform myself about special questions at Wine lexicon. Spontaneous reading and following links often leads to exciting discoveries in the wide world of wine.
