Millardet Alexis

The French doctor of medicine Pierre-Marie Alexis Millardet (1838-1902) became professor of botany at the University of Strasbourg in 1868. From 1874, he was a member of the committee set up in France to combat phylloxera. He is credited (among other people) with the idea of grafting European scions onto American rootstocks. Together with Georg Engelmann, Jules Émile Planchon, Charles Valentine Riley and Pierre Viala, he is considered the saviour of European viticulture against phylloxera. His name is contained in the botanical name of the vine species Vitis cinerea Engelm. ex Millardet.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
