Huge plateau landscape (German: Tafelland) in the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, which is crossed by the three rivers Duero, Tajo and Guadiana. The Meseta forms the centre of Spain, the two mountain ranges Sierra de Guadarrama and Serranía de Cuenca divide the area in two halves with the regions Extremadura, Castile-León and Castile-La Mancha. In the north-east is the capital Madrid. The extreme climate is characterized by hot summers and cold winters, but wine is still produced in huge quantities. Here are the DO's La Mancha (200.000 ha), Méntrida (12.800 ha), Ribera del Guadiana (13.200 ha), Valdepeñas (29.000 ha) and Vinos de Madrid (11.800 ha).
