Designation of an oversized bottle for a champagne with a volume of 30 litres or the content of 40 standard bottles of 0.75 litres each. However, the name is not origin-protected, but can be used freely for sparkling wine or wine. It is derived from the biblical figure Melchisedech (also Melchisedec, Melchisedek or Melchizedek), who is mentioned in the Bible in the book of Genesis 14, 17 to 19 as part of the Abraham narrative. He was king of Salem and blessed Abraham, who then paid tithes.
The significance of Melchisedech lies in the fact that he is the first priest ever mentioned in the Bible and that he used bread and wine for his sacrifice. In the Church, he is therefore regarded as the symbolic forerunner of Jesus Christ and the Eucharist he instituted at the Last Supper. The very rare size is used by the champagne house Drappier, for example. See listings under bottles (all formats) and wine vessels (all types).
