The winery is located in Waimauku in the Rodney District in the Auckland region, on the North Island of New Zealand. The name Matua means "head of the family" in the Maori language. It was founded in 1974 by brothers Bill and Ross Spence. They produced the first New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The Sauvignon Blanc clone they selected is now grown throughout New Zealand. The vineyards cover about 150 hectares of vines planted with the white wine varieties Sauvignon Bl anc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Riesling, as well as the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot No ir, Syrah, Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta), Malbec (Cot) and Merlot. The product range comprises around 30 wines marketed in the Estate, Matua Valley, Origins, Reserve, Shingle Peak and Single Vineyard lines. The winery was sold to the Australian multi Beringer Blass (now Treasury Wine Estates) in 2001.
As honorary chairman of the Domäne Wachau, it is the easiest and quickest way for me to access the wein.plus encyclopaedia when I have questions. The certainty of receiving well-founded and up-to-date information here makes it an indispensable guide.
