The winery is located in the municipality of Niederhausen in the German wine-growing region of Nahe. Together with his father Oskar, Helmut Mathern set the course for advancement in the 1980s. After his early death in 2002, his widow Gloria, who trained as an interior designer, took over the business. After studying viticulture and oenology in Geisenheim as well as various internships at home and abroad, son Henning Mathern has been responsible for the vineyards since the 2020 vintage and for the cellar since 2021. The "Alte Schule" guesthouse is attached. The vineyards cover 11 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Felsensteyer, Hermannshöhle, Kertz, Pfaffenstein, Rosenberg and Rosenheck (Niederhausen), as well as Dellchen and Kirschheck (Norheim). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (9 ha), Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc and Cabernet Blanc, as well as the red wine varieties Pinot Noir and Dornfelder, some of which are very old vines. After temperature-controlled fermentation, the wines are fruity matured in stainless steel tanks. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines, secco (sparkling wine), grape juice, yeast brandy and liqueurs are also produced. Around 70,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
