The state in the north-east of the USA with the capital Boston covers around 27,337 km². It borders New Hampshire and Vermont to the north, New York to the west, Connecticut and Rhode Island to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Massachusetts is one of the six states of what is known as New England. It was admitted to the United States in 1788 as the 6th state.

According to the latest findings, Nordic seafarers reached the coasts of North America as early as around 1000 AD - long before Christopher Columbus. The Icelander Leif Eriksson probably landed at L'Anse aux Meadows (Newfoundland), not in Massachusetts, named the area Vinland ("wine country") and discovered wild grapevines growing there.
