The estate is located in the municipality of Bellmunt del Priorat in the province of Tarragona in the Spanish region of Catalonia. It was founded in 1867 by Francesc Gil i Borràs (1828-1885), whose activities made him a pioneer in the Priorato DOCa area. As he had no descendants, the estate was taken over by Albert Rusiñol after his death. In 1931 it came into the possession of Rafael Barril Figueras. For a long time the grapes were sold to other wineries, but it was not until 1980 that the first wine was bottled and a new era began. Finally, in 1998, the company was acquired by Pere Rovira, who was active in the wine trade. Pere Rovira invested in the reactivation of olive groves and vineyards, as well as in the renovation of the winery and cellar facilities. Today the company is run by daughter Marta Rovira Carbonell.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
