French designation (abbreviation MA, Acheteur = buyer) for a brand of champagne produced by a producer on behalf of a supermarket or restaurant. The trademark owner is not the producer, but mostly the customer or, in the sense of the French designation, the buyer. There are producers who produce hundreds of such special champagnes for their various customers, often in small quantities. In some cases this is also called Marque Auxiliaire (auxiliary brand). It is an exclusive, protected term in Champagne. See also under Négociant, Bordeaux wine trade and wine trade.
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
