Marmajuelo

The white grape variety originates from the Canary Islands(Spain). Synonyms are Bermejuela (second main name), Bermeluejo, Marmajuela, Marmajuelo Blanco, Marmejuelo, Vermejuela and Vermejuelo. Nothing is known about the ancestry (parentage). A direct descendant is the variety Malvasía de Lanzarote. The vine is extremely susceptible to coulure. It produces full-bodied, acidic white wines with ageing potential, which are mostly used in blends. It is said to have been cultivated on the Canary Islands for several hundred years. It is permitted in all DO areas there. In 2016, 20 hectares of vines were designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
