The red grape variety originates from Italy. The parentage is unknown. Whether there are genetic links to the white varieties Mantonico Bianco or Montonico Bianco or the red varieties Gaglioppo, Magliocco Dolce or Nerello Cappuccio (all three with the synonym Mantonico Nero) is not known. In 2016, no stocks were reported under the name Mantonico Nero Inzenga (statistics Kym Anderson).
