Malvasia Preta

The red grape variety originates from Portugal; the name means "Black Malvasia". Synonyms are Moreto, Mureto, Mureto du Dão, Muretto, Negro Moura, Pinheira Roxa and Sillas. It is one of the many varieties with the name part Malvasia. According to the latest DNA analysis carried out in 2020, it is probably a natural cross between Cayetana Blanca x Alfrocheiro. However, this is based on only 21 DNA markers (see Molecular Genetics). Despite seemingly indicating synonyms or morphological similarities, it must not be confused with its numerous sibling varieties (see Cayetana Blanca) or Moreto do Dão. There is also a pink-berry mutation called Malvasia Preta Roxa. This late-maturing, high-yielding vine is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. It yields floral red wines with aromas of raspberries and violets with ageing potential. The variety is grown in the Douro and Beiras areas and is permitted in the Távora-Varosa DOC wine. In 2016, 1,933 hectares of vines were designated (Kym Anderson).
