The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Fragermano, Malvasia Casorzo, Malvasia Nera, Malvasia Nera di Casale, Malvasia Nera di Casorzo, Malvasia Nera di Piemonte and Moscatellina.

This is one of the many mostly unrelated varieties with the Malvasia part of the name (see there). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2021, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Malvasia Aromatica di Parma x Lambrusca di Alessandria. It should not be confused with the Malvasia di Schierano or Malvasia Nera Lunga varieties due to some of the same synonyms or morphological similarities.
