Malvasia de Colares

The white grape variety (also known as Malvasía) originates from Portugal. It is one of the numerous, mostly unrelated varieties with the Malvasia part of the name. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Hebén x Amaral. The high-yielding vine produces floral white wines with a mineral note and aromas of tropical fruits and herbs. It is cultivated in Portugal in the Colares area north-west of Lisbon on 801 hectares of vineyards. Due to the sandy soil that prevails here, it can be grown ungrafted. In Spain, it can be found on the Canary Islands and on the mainland, particularly in the two regions of Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha, on a total of 1,362 hectares of vineyards. In Argentina, there is a small population of 21 hectares. In 2016, a total of 2,184 hectares of vineyards were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
