The red grape variety (also Malvarisko) originates from Portugal. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2015, it is probably a natural cross between Alfrocheiro x Tinto Cão. However, this is based on only 21 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The vine is grown in small quantities in the Beira Interior, Ribatejo and Trás-os-Montes areas. In 2010, three hectares of vine area were designated (Kym Anderson).
