Malmesbury

Large wine-growing area (Ward) in the South African district of Swartland (Coastal Region). The second Ward in this district is called Rieebekberg and is much smaller. The name is derived from the clay slate soil that predominates here, known as Malmesbury. The vineyards cover 14,448 hectares (2009). They are planted with 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot, Cinsaut, Ruby Cabernet and Cabernet Franc reds and 44% Chenin Blanc (Steen), Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Colombar and Sémillon whites (2009). Due to lack of rainfall, artificial irrigation is sometimes necessary. Well known producers are Meerhof Wine Cellars, Spice Route, Swartland Winery and Windmeul Coop.
