Make Edmund

Born in Bergamo in the Italian region of Lombardy, the agricultural chemist and oenologist Dr Edmund Mach (1846-1901) studied at the Polytechnic School of Chemistry in Prague and completed his studies at the Polytechnic in Vienna. After two years as an assistant at the forestry academy in Mariabrunn Monastery, he was appointed assistant at the oenochemical research station of the Klosterneuburg Wine Institute (Lower Austria) in 1870. He later became the first director of the agricultural training centre Istituto Agrario di San Michele all'Adige (Trentino), which he managed until 1899 and developed into a research and experimental institute. After leaving there, he was appointed consultant for fruit growing and viticulture at the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Agriculture. Ministry of Agriculture.
