The largest island (Catalan "the larger", in contrast to Minorca, "the smaller") of the Balearic Islands, which belong to Spain, at 3,604 km². It is located in the western Mediterranean about 170 kilometres from the Spanish mainland. The capital Palma is also located here. Mallorca is the seventh largest island in the Mediterranean. It stretches 98 kilometres from east to west and 78 kilometres from north to south. In addition to the main island of Mallorca, the administrative area of Mallorca also includes the Cabrera archipelago (18.4 km²) and the island of Sa Dragonera (2.9 km²).

The up to 15 km wide and over 90 km long mountain range "Serra de Tramuntana" runs parallel to the north-west coast. Tomatoes, beans and grapes are grown on terraced slopes on the sides of the mountains. Potatoes, rice, maize and vegetables as well as grapes are cultivated on the Pla de Mallorca plain in the central part, and there are many almond tree plantations. To the north-east lies the region of Llevant (east), which is crossed by the Serres de Llevant mountain range. It has a temperate subtropical climate with 8 hours of sunshine a day and sufficient rainfall. There are short, mild and humid winters and summers with little rainfall.
