The state in the far north-east of the USA with the capital Augusta covers 86,542 km². It borders New Hampshire to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec to the north and north-west. Maine was admitted to the Union in 1820 as the 23rd state.

The area that is now Maine was first settled in the 17th century by French settlers from Acadia (French colonial territory) and later by English colonists. Due to the harsh climate and the short vegetation cycle, viticulture remained insignificant for a long time. The oldest commercial winery, Bartlett Maine Estate Winery, was only founded in 1983 and became famous for its high-quality fruit wines. In doing so, Maine created its own wine industry largely outside of traditional viticulture.
