The municipality of Mailberg lies to the west of Haugsdorf in the north-east of the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Weinviertel, 6 kilometres from the border with the Czech Republic. Wine was already being grown here at the beginning of the first millennium. This is documented for the year 1140, when land with vines was donated to the Order of the Knights of Malta in "Mourberg". Today, the Order of Malta Castle Winery is run on this historic site. There is a wine shop in the castle. A large cellar lane festival is held every year.

Other four important wine-growing communities in the northern Weinviertel are Falkenstein (approx. 17 km east of Mailberg), Poysdorf (approx. 18 km south-east), Herrnbaumgarten (approx. 22 km south-east) and Retz (approx. 11 km north-west).
