Madrasa

The red grape variety originates from Azerbaijan and is named after the municipality of the same name in the north-eastern region of Shirvan. Synonyms are Chirai, Gara Shira, Kara Chirei, Kara Shirei, Matrasa, Matrassa, Medrese, Qara Shira, Sevi Shirai and Shiraj Chernyj. The parentage is unknown. The medium-maturing vine with thick-skinned berries is resistant to frost, drought and fungal diseases. It produces dark-coloured red wines with high alcohol and tannin content, which are vinified dry, sweet and spritzed. The variety has been cultivated in Azerbaijan since at least the 19th century, in Armenia mainly near the Caspian Sea, and in Kazakhstan (28 ha). In Ukraine, it is also used for Crimean sparkling wine. In 2016, only one stand was reported in Kazakhstan (Kym Anderson).
