Lueger Karl

The Austrian politician and lawyer Dr. Karl Lueger (1844-1910) was mayor of Vienna. In the Lower Austrian community of Gumpoldskirchen, he had the Lueger cellar, named after him, built in 1905, which served as an annex to the Vienna Town Hall cellar. Today it is the operating site of the Spaetrot Gebeshuber winery. Around the turn of the century, at a ball in Vienna, Emperor Franz-Joseph I (1830-1916) served wine from the Wachau community of Loiben. The emperor commented on this with the words: "I would never have thought that there is such good wine in my countries". Lueger then suggested the name "Loibner Kaiserwein", which is still used today for a popular brand name wine.
