The red grape variety comes from Spain. It must not be confused with the white variety Loureiro from Portugal or the Spanish Mencía (with the confusing synonym Loureiro Tinto), despite the fact that the names are apparently synonymous or similar. To date, no genetic links have been found with either of them. The variety is cultivated in Galicia in the Rías Baixas area on 13 hectares.
