Livermore Valley

AVA area in Alameda County in the Central Coast region of California. It is named after landowner and viticultural pioneer Robert Livermore (1799-1858), who planted the first vineyard here in 1846. The first Californian wine ever to win an award abroad came from here, in 1889 at the World's Fair in Paris. In 1916, the Chardonnay grape was grown here for the first time in California. The 25-kilometre-long and 16-kilometre-wide valley is embedded in the slopes of the coastal mountains to the east of nearby San Francisco Bay. It has a temperate climate with cool sea breezes and morning mists.

Livermore - Weinberg

The vineyards cover 2,000 hectares of vines on deep, stony soils that have earned the Valley the appellation "Graves of California". The main red wine varieties are Petite Sirah (Durif), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cinsaut, Malbec (Cot), Zinfandel and Sangiovese; the main white wine varieties are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Bl anc, Sémillon, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chenin Blanc and Viognier. The two largest producers are Wente Vineyards (oldest family winery in the US) and Concannon Vineyard.
