The former USSR republic with the capital Vilnius is the southernmost of the three Baltic states. These have a total population of about six million people on an area of about 175,000 km². They have been independent since 1990 and members of the EU since 2004. Lithuania borders the Baltic Sea to the west and Latvia, Belarus, Poland and Russia. There is a small amount of viticulture. The annual wine production volume is about 60,000 hectolitres.
