AOC area in the west of the wine-growing region of Provence. It forms a small enclave within the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence area, to which it belonged until 1995 (red wines) and 2005 (white wines) before it became independent. The area can be considered a Grand Cru with stricter regulations. As the first French appellation, only wines from biodynamic viticulture are permitted here. The vineyards on the Alpilles hills south of Avignon cover 300 hectares of vines in the eight communes of Les Baux-de-Provence, Fontvieille, Maussane-les-Alpilles, Mouriès, Paradou, Eygalières, Saint-Etienne-du-Grès and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
