Leiten

Old designation for a sunny mountain slope (slagheap) or hanging vineyard. This is still contained in many field and vineyard names. In Austria, for example, these are the sites Achleiten (Wachau), Hundsleiten (Weinviertel), Sonnleiten (Weinviertel) and Steinleiten (Wachau), and in South Tyrol the Bozner Leiten. The term is derived from the Middle High German Leit (or Lit) for wine. See also under Leitgeben.
