The DOC region for red, white and rosé wines is situated in the Algarve region in the far south of Portugal. It comprises the municipalities of Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo in the western part of the Algarve on the Atlantic coast. Lagos is one of the four DOC regions in the Algarve; the other three are Lagoa, Portimão and Tavira.

The red wines are mainly made from Negra Mole (Negramoll) as well as the Periquita (Castelão Francês) and Trincadeira Preta varieties. The white wines are made from Boal Branco and other authorised varieties. The warm Mediterranean climate generally produces full-bodied, high-alcohol wines.
