A wine defect (also pharmacy clay, chemical clay, medicinal clay, nail varnish clay, pharmaceutical clay); see under solvent clay.
Collective term for various wine defects with similar causes, symptoms and effects. They are also known as pharmacy taint, chemical taint, medicinal taint, nail varnish taint or pharmaceutical taint. This is characterised by a distinctive smell and taste of solvents such as acetone, ethyl acetate, isopropanol and methyl ethyl ketone. It should be noted that the typical adhesive or nail varnish colour is primarily caused by ethyl acetate(Uhuton), while the term "solvent colour" is broader and includes several substances.
