The vineyard is located in the commune of Saint-Julien in the area of the same name in the Médoc(Bordeaux). The estate, which resulted from a division of the Beychevelle barony, was acquired in 1795 by Bertrand Ducru, who gave it his name. The second part of the name is derived from the pebble soil (beau caillou = beautiful pebble). In the 1855 Bordeaux classification, it was awarded second place (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé).
