Kugler Josef

The winery "Vinum Saxum Kugler" is located in the municipality of St. Margarethen in the DAC region of Leithaberg in Burgenland (Austria). The family has been involved in viticulture for several generations. It has been run by Josef and Maria Kugler since 1986, who are supported by their son Alexander and their daughters Angelika and Victoria. The vineyards cover 13 hectares of vines around the Römersteinbruch quarry on loamy primary rock soils. They are planted with 50% each of the red wine varieties Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, St. Laurent, Roesler, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah, and the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Traminer and Neuburger.

Natural, environmentally friendly viticulture with integrated p est management is practised. The white wines are matured in steel tanks to become pure and fruity. The red wines mature in the newly renovated barrel cellar in large wooden barrels and increasingly in barrique. The flagship of the house is the Vision No. 1 red wine cuvée from Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir, aged for 13 months in barrique. Other premium wines are Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. In years with suitable weather conditions, sweet wines such as Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein are pressed. Fine brandies, grape juice, liqueur and honey are also produced.
