The traditional winery is located in the municipality of Gumpoldskirchen in the heart of the winegrowing region Thermenregion (Lower Austria). Viticulture has been practised by the Krug family in Gumpoldskirchen since 1746, which is documented in writing in the land register introduced under Maria Theresa (1717-1780). The "Altes Zechhaus" wine tavern first opened its doors in 1970. In 1998, the wine cellar was moved out and a modern, functional winery was built in the middle of the vineyards. The vineyards cover 35 hectares in the Asslatz, Doctnerin, Eichkogel, Hausberg, Katzbühel, Kreuzweingarten, Rasslerin and Sonnberg vineyards. They are 60% planted with the white wine varieties Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Rotgipfler, Zierfandler, Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and 40% with the red wine varieties Merlot, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are cultivated according to the guidelines of natural viticulture.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
