The red grape variety comes from Greece; probably from Crete. It is the result of a crossing between Liatiko x unknown partner. However, this is based on only nine DNA markers (see molecular genetics). However, the variety Kotsifali, which is similar in name, is not a suitable second parent. The vine is almost extinct. In 2010 no stock was reported (Statistik Kym Anderson).
