Kirnbauer Walter

The "K+K Kirnbauer" winery is located in the municipality of Deutschkreutz in the Mittelburgenland wine-growing region (Austria) in the middle of the company's own vineyards. The family business was taken over by Walter and Irmgard Kirnbauer in 1975. The next generation, Markus and Alexandra, are already working in the business. The vineyards cover 38 hectares of vineyards, which are widely scattered in the areas Baumfeld, Gartenäcker, Goldberg, Hochfeld, Hölzl, Hölzläcker, Mitterberg, Neuberg, Pallischkreuz, Rohrbrunn, Satz, Siglosgrund, Steinriegel and Weiselkreuz. 90% of them are linked to the red wine varieties BlaufränkischZweigelt, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and the rest with the white wine varieties Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The quality criteria in the vineyard are a high vine density, short pruning with a low number of eyes per vine, thinning out (green harvest) to reduce yield and intensive care of the foliage. The fruity white wines mature for a few months in stainless steel. The red wines complete the malolactic fermentation in large oak barrels and then mature for another year. However, the top red wines are kept in barrique barrels for at least 18 months. These are partly made from oak wood, which comes from the Deutschkreutz district of Girm's own forest. The barrique barrels are sprinkled several times a day with selected and relaxing music (e.g. from the locally known violinist Toni Stricker) for the effect of special "vibrations". The flagship of the house is the extremely long-lasting red wine cuvée "Das Phantom", which is blended from Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah and aged in French barriques. Other premium wines are "Forever" (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) and "Girmer" (from 50-year-old Zweigelt vines), which is aged for 38 months in barriques. The cellar stores wines dating back to 1974, including the first Phantom vintage from 1987. 200,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
