King Valley

Wine growing area (GI) in the state of Victoria in Australia with the two sub-areas Myrrh and Whitlands. The main town is called Whitfield. The area belongs to the North East Victoria zone. There are the After the Second World War Italian immigrants founded a flourishing tobacco industry here. In the early 1970s, Australian farmers Guy Darling and John Levigny planted vines for the first time. Due to their great success, their Italian neighbours imitated this. An important influence was exerted by Brown Brothers, a family business founded shortly afterwards, which processed large quantities of purchased grapes. King Valley is flat to the north and mountainous to the south. The vineyards cover about 700 hectares. The most important white wine varieties are Chardonnay and Riesling, the most important red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz(Syrah) and Merlot, and in smaller quantities the Italian varieties Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. The climate influenced by the King River is ideal for sparkling wines, which are produced in larger quantities.
