The originally protected PDO area is located in the Kakheti region of Georgia. It stretches from 250 to 700 metres above sea level near the municipality of Kvareli on the southern slopes of a branch of the Caucasus. The vineyards cover 225 hectares, the majority of which is cultivated by the "Corporation Kindzmarauli" based in Kvareli. The medium sweet red wine is blended from the Saperavi and/or Saperavi Budeshuri varieties. The ruby-red wine is characterised by a velvety, fruity aroma of berries. Like the PDO wine Khvanchkara, it was one of the favourite wines of Josef Stalin (1878-1953).
