The Austrian sparkling wine house with its headquarters in the Austrian capital Vienna was founded in 1857 by Johann Kattus I (1823-1899) in the 1st district of Am Hof as a trading house. In the beginning wine, coffee, tea, tropical fruits, spirits and champagne, later also caviar were sold. A little later, Kattus founded a factorei on the Caspian Sea in Astrakhan (today's Russia). He supplies the ruling courts in Vienna and Saint Petersburg with the so-called "black gold". Very early on, Kattus also established contacts with the famous champagne house Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin in Reims, a business relationship that still exists today.
