The winery is located in the municipality of Freinsheim (Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. It was founded in 1949 by Mathilde Kassner and Willi Simon. Today, the winery is run by Thomas and Martina Simon. In 2016, a new winery was put into operation.
The vineyards cover 16 hectares of vines in the Frensheim single vineyard sites Musikantenbuckel (Gewann Im Tal), Oschelskopf (Gewann Auf dem mittleren Groß) and Schwarzes Kreuz. They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (one third), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Scheurebe, Auxerrois, Chardonnay, Rieslaner, Sauvignon Blanc and Müller-Thurgau, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Merlot, Blauer Portugieser, Dornfelder, Cabernet Dorsa, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The vineyards are cultivated according to the guidelines of the Beratungsring Kontrolliert Umweltschonender Weinbau Pfalz e.V. (Advisory Council for Controlled and Environmentally Friendly Winegrowing in the Palatinate).
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
