The "Kartäuserhof - Karl Stierschneider" winery is located in the municipality of Weißenkirchen in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Wachau. The traditional farm was built in 1380 as a reading farm for the Aggsbach Charterhouse, from which the name is derived. It was taken over by the Stierschneider family in 1862 and is now run by Karl Stierschneider in the third generation. The vineyards cover ten hectares of vines in the Achleiten, Hinterkirchen, Klaus and Steinriegl vineyards on south-facing terraces. They are 90% planted with white wine varieties such as Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller, with the remaining 10% planted with the red wine varieties Zweigelt and Pinot Noir. The premium wines include Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus and the red wine cuvée "Decimo", which is matured in barriques for 26 months. Around 80,000 to 100,000 bottles of wine are produced each year.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
