Karalahna

The red grape variety comes from Turkey; the name means "black pumpkin", which refers to the large, dark berries. Synonyms are Karalahana, Kara Lahna, Kara Lakana, Lachna Kara, Lahna Kara, Lakana and Sota. The lineage (parentage) is unknown. The medium to late ripening vine is generally well resistant to various vine diseases. It produces dark-coloured, full-bodied, acidic red wines with pronounced tannins and aromas of black and red berries and ageing potential. It is grown on the southern coast of the Dardanelles in the extreme west of the country. In the past it was mainly used for the production of brandy. Today it is mainly used as a colour-enhancing blend. In 2016, four hectares of vineyard area were designated (statistics Kym Anderson).
