Kapitan Jani Kara

The red grape variety originates from Ukraine. Synonyms are Adzhi Ibram Kara, Adzni Ibram Kara, Agii Ibram, Capitan Kara, Chaban Khalil Kara, Kapitane Yani Kara, Kapitan Yani Kara, Ridzhaga, Rindjaga, Rindzhaga and Rinjaga.

Ancestry

The ancestry (parentage) is unknown.

Characteristics

The medium to late-maturing, high-yielding vine is susceptible to powdery mildew (oidium). It produces dark red with almost black nuances, full-bodied and supple red wines with soft tannins.

Cultivation areas

The variety is cultivated in the Sudak region in the Solnechnaya Dolina (Sun Valley) area of Crimea. There it is used in blends with other local varieties such as Ekim Kara in sweet dessert wines. Among other things, it is a component of the branded wine Tschorny Doktor. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
