Kanonkop Estate

The winery is situated on the foothills of the Simonsberg in the north of South Africa's Stellenbosch wine-growing district. It was founded in 1712 by J. W. acid. The entrance to the estate is adorned by an old cannon, which gives the estate its name, that once stood on a nearby hill and was fired when ships entered Table Bay. The current owners are Johann and Paul Krige. The vineyards cover 100 hectares. About half is occupied by Pinotage, the second half is shared by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. There are cool breezes from the nearby Atlantic and this, combined with the water-retaining soils of red granite with a high clay content, produces excellent red wines. Artificial irrigation is required to a small extent. Kanonkop became famous in the 1950s for its long-lived, barrique-aged Pinotage, which is considered the best in South Africa. The high quality of this red wine was influenced by winemaker Jan Coetzee, who then acquired the Vriesenhof estate in 1981. The second top product "Paul Sauer" is produced from Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%). The deep purple wine is aged in barriques for up to 26 months. The second wine is called "Kadette". Around 300,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
