June beetle

The up to 3 centimetre long, yellow to maroon coloured beetle (English Grapevine beetle) with three black spots on each side (therefore also spotted June beetle, Pelidnota punctata). It flies at high speed, usually in a turning flight. The beetles are found mainly in the north, on the east coast and in some central states of the USA, as well as in Canada. The June beetle should not be confused with the rugged curlew beetle, a relative of the cockchafer, or the ladybird, also known as the June beetle. The American June beetle lives mainly in forests, but also occurs in vineyards. The eggs are laid in rotten wood, tree stumps or on the ground near the host plants where the larvae hatch. The beetle then hatches in June. The adult beetle eats the leaves and berries, but it is usually not a large pest. See also a complete list of all pests under vine enemies.
