The red grape variety most likely originates from France. Synonyms are Jaubertin, Pinot Joubertin, Plant d'Aix, Plant de la Claye, Plant de la Mure and Plante de la Mure.

It was discovered and selected around 1835 by the eponymous winegrower Joubertin in a vineyard in the commune of La Claye near Grenoble. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it is probably a natural cross between Persan x Peloursin. However, an analysis carried out in 2021 was unable to confirm the parent variety.
The early to medium-maturing, high-yielding vine is not particularly susceptible to vine diseases. It produces intensely coloured, deep, dark red wines that are used as a colouring blend(Teinturier).
